The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development invites written submissions to its review of the Jervis Bay Territory Rural Fire Ordinance 2014 and the Jervis Bay Territory Rural Fires Rule 2014 (the Ordinance).
The purpose of the Ordinance is to provide fire management services to the Jervis Bay Territory (JBT), including by establishing a JBT Rural Fire Service, a JBT Fire Management Committee and mandating the preparation of JBT Bush Fire Management Plans.
The Ordinance provides the legislative basis for fire management services in the JBT. Due to the cross-border delivery of fire services from NSW to the JBT, the Ordinance is based on the NSW Rural Fires Act 1997 and Rural Fires Regulations 2008, with modifications to reflect the JBT's jurisdictional and administrative circumstances.
The Ordinance commenced on 30 April 2014. Section 99 of the Ordinance requires the Minister responsible for the JBT to review the Ordinance within four years of its commencement, and at least once in every four-year interval after that date.
You are invited to provide a written submission to the Department, to establish if the Ordinance goals, detailed below, remain valid, and if the provisions of the Ordinance remain appropriate to secure these goals:
- the prevention, mitigation and suppression of bush and other fires in the Territory; and
- the coordination of bush fire fighting and bush fire prevention throughout the Territory; and
- the protection of persons from injury or death, and property from damage, arising from fires; and
- the protection of the environment.
Please provide your written submission by Monday, 20 November 2017, to the Director, Jervis Bay Territory Administration, GPO Box 594, Canberra, ACT 2601 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
