Topic: Update on Repairs to Christmas Island Port Infrastructure

I am pleased to provide a further update to the community on progress with the repairs to critical components of the Christmas Island Port infrastructure.

Repairs to the wharf crane

The wharf crane was expected return to service around 21 August, in time to discharge the next general cargo vessel.  Due to a slight delay in the delivery of replacement pins, the reassembly of the crane will not completed until around 27 August.

To ensure continuity of port operations, the Department has entered into a hire agreement with PRL to use its 100 tonne mobile crane to discharge the general cargo vessel.

Purchase of the crawler crane

I am pleased to advise that the crawler crane departed Darwin Harbour on 17 August on a barge bound for Christmas Island.

With favourable weather and sea conditions, the crawler crane is expected to arrive at Christmas Island around 29 August.  Following commissioning and testing, crane operator training will be delivered.

I thank the community for its patience as we work to repair the port facilities.  I also thank the port manager, PRL and Zentner for their assistance in minimising disruption.
