Topic: BreastScreening—Mammography Update
I am pleased to advise that Senator the Hon Fiona Nash, Minister for Local Government and Territories, has agreed to the purchase of two new mammography machines: one will be located on Christmas Island (CI) and one on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI).
Since the Minister agreed in February to a new machine for CI, the Department has worked with BreastScreen WA and Siemens (the manufacturer) to progress the upgrade in technology. Following analysis of options to also improve services to CKI and recent advice from Siemens, the Minister has agreed to a second new machine, to be located on CKI. These new digital machines will provide residents of both territories with local access to the most up to date technology for a screening mammogram, consistent with women on the mainland.
Siemens will conduct a project scoping visit with the IOT Health Services on CI during 5–8 August and CKI during 8–12 August. This will ensure Siemens can consider all relevant local elements for implementing the new mammography solution.
Following the scoping visit, a contract will be finalised to purchase the machines and a delivery timeframe will be advised by Siemens. The Department will work with Siemens to expedite the delivery and installation of the new machines where possible.
The Department is also working with BreastScreen WA to make arrangements for mammography screening to take place on both islands once the installation process is complete.
I look forward to continuing to provide you with updates on the mammography services.
