The Australian Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories announced today that it has commenced a new inquiry into the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean Territories.
The Committee will inquire into and report on the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean Territories to Australia, with regard to:
- the changing regional security environment and security contingencies;
- defence capability in the territories and associated infrastructure development;
- the scope of maritime, air and other cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners; and
- impacts on local communities.

The Committee welcomes submissions for its consideration.
This is an opportunity to put on record your thinking on the future of the Indian Ocean Territories. I would therefore encourage residents of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands to make a submission if they have views on the inquiry's terms of reference that they wish to share with the Committee.
