The Australian Government is committed to provide a reliable, high quality mammography screening service to the women of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

The Department has asked Breastscreen WA to provide advice on purchasing a new mammography machine for Christmas Island and options to provide a mammography screening service to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. We expect to receive this advice in the next month. The existing mammography machine on Christmas Island will not be returned to service.

Purchasing a new mammography machine is a significant investment and it is important that we make the right choice. As such, we are taking the advice of the technical experts at Breastscreen WA.

In the interim, the IOT Health Service is advising women who may be visiting Perth in the near future to arrange a mammogram with Breastscreen. This is a free service and appointments can be made by calling 13 20 50.

If you have any concerns about your breast health, please contact the IOT Health Service to make an appointment with a doctor. I look forward to being able to provide you with another update on developments with the mammography service.
