Topic: Abandoned Sea Vessel

The Department wishes to advise the community that the remnants of the abandoned sea vessel washed up on the West Island coast will be burnt in its current location on 12 October 2017 at approximately 12:00 (local time).

The Department has engaged Linx Stevedoring to manage the destruction of the vessel and burning of the remnants was scheduled in the original destruction plan.

Whilst every effort will be made to limit the impact on the community, smoke may travel on shore. The Department encourages anyone with asthma or other respiratory conditions to stay inside until any smoke subsides.

Following the destruction of the remnants Linx will undertake a final coastline clean-up to remove all debris that poses a biosecurity risk.

The Department thanks the Cocos community for its assistance with this matter. Community members are reminded of the importance of returning all souvenired debris from the vessel, to the drop off point at the “Elephant's Graveyard” to ensure it can be responsibly disposed of.
