Topic: Abandoned Sea Vessel

An abandoned sea vessel has washed up onto the reef close to shore on West Island. A 250-metre exclusion zone has been established by the Australian Federal Police around the vessel. To manage safety, environmental and biosecurity risks, the Department asks that all members of the community maintain this exclusion zone and do not approach the vessel.

Members of the community are also asked not to collect any debris from the vessel, including wood. The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has advised that debris poses a biosecurity risk and must be destroyed if found.

The Department is working with the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources to establish a drop-off point for all debris to be returned for destruction. The Department will advise, via a Community Bulletin, the location of the drop‑off point and operational hours once established.

The Department has engaged Linx Stevedoring, the contracted Indian Ocean Territories Port Managers, to manage the destruction of the abandoned sea vessel and its contents. Linx is commencing this work immediately, with timing for completion dependent on the weather.
