Topic: Breastscreen—Cancelled Screening

Breastscreen WA provides screening to eligible female residents every two years. A visit was scheduled for Christmas Island from 24 August through to 12 September 2016. This has now been cancelled.

The mammography machine is only used during the Breastscreen visit. In preparation for the visit the machine is tested and calibrated by visiting engineers to ensure it meets Australian Standards, and is safe and accurate.

On 5 August we were advised that the equipment had not met the standards required. We are in the process of assessing the costs of having the equipment repaired or replaced, and some other options.

Unfortunately this happened at the same time that appointment letters were sent out, reminding women of the Breastscreen visit. IOTHS is advising women who may be visiting Perth in the near future to arrange a mammogram with Breastscreen. This is a free service and appointments can be made by calling 13 20 50.

Another bulletin will be issued once we have reviewed the different options.

If you have any concerns about your breast health, please contact the IOTHS to make an appointment with a doctor.
